Manage Your Future
How Do You Foster Well-Planned Growth, Protect Water Quality and Preserve Natural Areas?
Managing your community's future is a challenging and constant task. How do you build in ongoing strategies for ensuring well-planned growth, protecting water quality and preserving important natural areas? Communities employ one, or usually many, linked tools to manage their way towards their vision of the future. How do they do it and what is the result? Here are some examples, and how NEMO can help.
A Community's Story
Cumberland, MD - Community Greening
Fluvanna County, VA - Open Space Conservation Planning
Frederick County, MD - Organizing to Restore a Watershed
Prince Georges County, MD - Managing Residential Runoff
How NEMO Can Help
Communities manage their future with many land use and natural resource management tools. Developing and implementing these tools can take place through many routes:
- Using a strategic planning process
- As part of a regular planning cycle, like an update of a comprehensive plan
- As part of one of a variety of implementation plans, such as a watershed management plan or land or heritage conservation plan
- Through revisions to codes and ordinances, such as to incorporate low impact development standards
- Through developing training, education, incentives, monitoring and other continuing implementation programs
NEMO technical assistance staff can help communities: develop a strategic planning process, facilitate a natural resource and conservation planning, access expertise on low impact development standards, develop implementation programs and suggest strategies for involving stakeholders. The nature and timing of assistance are tailored to a community's need, and coordinated with appropriate NEMO presentations, workshops and funding assistance from existing grant programs.
